A landmark hotel built in 1863, the Duke of Cornwall stands as a defining figure in Plymouth's past and present, surviving two World Wars and radical changes to its surroundings. Its splendid Victorian gothic architecture makes a striking statement in the contemporary cityscape.
Under previous directors Walter Combstock and Jonathan Morcom, the hotel retained its charm while introducing sympathetic modernisations. Today the Duke is owned by Fragrance UK and continues its tradition of comfort, style and first-class service.
Dating from 1863, the Duke offers a wealth of historic features including a Grade II listed staircase. Notable guests over the years have included explorer Ernest Shackleton, showbiz names such as Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy, and returning Titanic crew survivors who spent their first night back at the Duke.
My only desire was that I could stay longer. Much longer.
